Göttingen project “LibraryAI” develops virtual assistant for library research

The Göttingen State and University Library (SUB), the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Göttingen and the GWDG are jointly developing a virtual assistant called “LibraryAI” based on large language models to facilitate research in libraries. The assistant will answer questions via chat, summarise content and also understand scientific jargon thanks to AI models specially tailored to libraries and research. The joint project “LibraryAI” is being funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) for a period of three years with more than one million euros and will begin in December 2025.

“The project offers a promising opportunity to support researchers in their work. The topic of AI itself will also be increasingly integrated into all areas of the research landscape in order to offer users significant added value.”, says Prof. Dr Julian Kunkel, Deputy Head of the GWDG – High-Performance Computing and Coordinator of the AI Service Centre KISSKI.
